1. Trim the Wick Before Each Burn
Before lighting your wooden wick candle, trim it to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch. This helps prevent a large flame, reduces soot, and ensures a smooth, even burn. Trimming the wick will also prevent the candle from flickering and helps maintain the integrity of the wood wick.
2. Let the Wax Pool Fully Melt
To avoid tunneling and ensure an even burn, allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the jar during each burn. This typically takes about 2-4 hours. A full melt pool ensures your candle burns evenly and lasts longer.
3. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts
Place your candle in a stable, draft-free area. Drafts from open windows, fans, or air conditioning can cause uneven burning, flickering, and soot production. A calm environment will help your wooden wick burn steadily, enhancing the candle's performance.
4. Burn for No More Than 4 Hours at a Time
For safety and optimal performance, avoid burning your candle for longer than 4 hours at a stretch. This helps prevent overheating and ensures the candle burns cleanly. Allow the candle to cool before relighting it.
5. Properly Extinguish the Flame
To extinguish your candle, avoid blowing it out as it can cause the wax to splatter. Instead, use a wick dipper or snuffer to safely extinguish the flame. This method prevents smoke and maintains the wooden wick’s structure for future use.
